It used to be that our news was collected and distributed through a limited number of channels.
The iconic news source in the 1960's was Walter Cronkite.
His avuncular mien and adherence to journalistic integrity—exemplified by his sign-off line, “And that's the way it is”—endeared him to the American public, and a 1972 poll named him “the most trusted man in America.” https://www.britannica.com/biography/Walter-Cronkite
Now it seems that any ones opinions can be sent out via the internet and there is an unlimited number of channels.
The system is built so then preferentially post back to you channels that are similar to what you have previously selected. This in turn 'confirms' and amplifies your mindset.
Where there was once review about what was posted, now there is a desire to drive viewership, often achieved through outlandish statements.
